How Do I Handle a Student in Crisis?

Our students interact with faculty, staff, and peers every day. This puts you in a powerful position to notice when something seems “off”. You might notice a student who is distressed, disruptive, disturbed, or dangerous. So, what should you do?

Step 1: Express sincere concern for the student and their situation. If the situation isn’t urgent or dangerous, approach them with care and compassion. Ask them what, if anything, may be wrong and how you could be of assistance.

Step 2: If the student is an imminent threat to themselves or others, IMMEDIATELY contact UTA PD at 817-272-3003 or 911.

Step 3: Reassure the student that seeking help is an act of strength not weakness.

Step 4: Be sure to note what you’re seeing - specific behaviors, quotes, or actions.

Step 5: Notify the CARE Team by submitting an online referral. Be sure to outline any steps you’ve taken.
