Innovation Management
Innovation management is a partnership-based approach to identifying opportunities and advancing research down commercial pathways. It uses private-sector and startup best practices to increase faculty engagement, improve operational efficiencies, maximize resource allocation, and generate better commercial outcomes.
Innovation management starts with a process of opportunity development. That means engaging entrepreneurs, industry representatives, and investors to determine where markets are headed, study comparative and competitive landscapes, identify investment priorities, uncover research and technology needs. Focusing on them as customers for university intellectual property creates opportunities for faculty to invent solutions to existing and anticipated problems.
Where to Go, How to Get There
Pursuing market-based opportunities also requires university research to advance along well-documented pathway. Startups and industry don't just want a patent -- they want to see data, prototypes, and demonstration projects. CETD assists in identifying those pathways through workshops and programs, networking events, and one-on-one engagements. Additionally, we help determine the human, financial, and other resources necessary to advance technology to the point where it can be licensed.
IM = OD x CP
Not all research is applied and not all innovations lead to licenses. Just as humanity’s understanding of the world would be nowhere without fundamental knowledge, its ability to benefit from that knowledge would be nowhere without entrepreneurial experimentation and business pursuits. Working together, we are excited by the boundaries we will push, the meaningful changes we will create, and social benefit we will inspire. Developing Opportunities along Commercialization Pathways is the foundation for Innovation Management – Let’s do it together.
For those with an interest in commercializing innovations from their own research, or who’d like to start a company unrelated to their scholarly pursuits, several mentoring options are available.
