UTA Digital Design System

The Digital Design System is the overarching style, rules, and regulations that tie the whole UTA website together. The design system makes sure that every page on the website feels consistent with the rest of the site, so users have a seamless experience on their journey through UTA.edu.

How to create a great webpage in four easy steps

  1. Determine the purpose of the page.
    1. Generally, this is the first question that is answered, and drives the need for the page. However, it is still important to make sure that you and all involved stakeholders understand the purpose of the page. Having a strong purpose will help generate strong content, reduce scope creep, and increase how findable your page is on search engines.
  2. Identify your audience.
    1. It’s no use designing a page that completely misses your intended audience. Different audiences have different needs. Take, for example, an admissions page. Parents will have different needs and ideals than students, for example parents tend to care more about the safety of the area than an incoming student, who may be more concerned about student life. Remember – meet people where they are!
  3. Put together a wireframe and write content.
    1. These steps are technically interchangeable, as it really depends on the purpose of the page. If you’re creating a page that has, for example, non-editable legal content, you’ll want to tailor the page around the content.

However, if you have flexibility in your content, it can be best to design a wireframe or at least put together a page outline. The wireframe or page outline helps to determine the actual structure of the page, and can help guide your content strategy. Generally, it’s better to create a wireframe and bend your content to fit that wireframe.

Think of it this way. If you’re building a house, you generally want to start with a blueprint, and then fill it with furniture and home decor to fit. You wouldn’t (generally) buy a table and then build the entire house around that table! But, if you’re building, say, a bank, you have to include the vault – there is no way around it. In that case, it will be in your best interests to build the bank around the unchangeable vault.
  4. Build out the page.
    1. Now that you have a blueprint, you’re ready to build! Find your components, add copy, great images, video, and more.
