Community Engagement Opportunities

The Phoenix Academy works with grade levels one through 12. Although The Academy very much operates as one unified campus, there are actually two distinct programs housed in our building. The Phoenix Academy is an option for students to earn a high school diploma in an alternative setting. The Behavior Intervention Center (BIC) Program was established to serve the academic and behavioral needs of students who have violated the Student Code of Conduct.

The Salvation Army Family Life Shelter is a program designed to help stabilize homeless families and teach them the necessary skills to live independently in the community. Basic needs such as food, shelter and childcare are provided, while independent living skills are taught through educational workshops, counseling, and community resource networking.

The Salvation Army of Arlington is a neighborhood center for worship, education, recreation, music and community activity. The Salvation Army YET Youth Education Town provides after-school and summer youth programs for children of all ages. Youth activities include indoor/outdoor educational activities and arts and crafts that are all supervised by adults. The Army’s Creative Arts Program seeks to provide performing Arts education to children in need (brass, guitar, vocal, and dramatic instruction). This center is located at 712 W. Abram Street, Arlington.

The Thank You Darlin' Foundation's mission is to help disadvantaged youth experience academic and personal success through the arts. We carry out this mission through supplemental teaching, after-school programs, youth anthology publications, spoken word performances, and poetry slam competitions.

Across the nation students are struggling and failing because of a decline in literacy skills, and this is especially true for economically disadvantaged youth. The National Assessment of Adult Literacy reported that 85 percent of all youths who interface with the juvenile court system are illiterate. In addition, many Texas school districts have experienced drastic cuts to funds for the arts and after-school enrichment programs. Unfortunately, those at greatest risk for harm are children from low-income families living in impoverished neighborhoods.

General Service Needs
Our Voice2Youth program unites the arts with literacy. It is our core program, a quality supplementary education program aligned with Texas Essential Knowledge and Skills (TEKS) guidelines for English Language Arts, Poetry, and Drama.

We offer service learning opportunities in nonprofit management, marketing, and K-12 teaching experience.

The WARM Place is a nonprofit 501(c)(3) agency that provides peer-support groups for children and their families after the death of a loved one. Founded in 1989, The WARM Place has companioned over 38,000 children and their families along their grief journey.

General Service Needs
Our program, led by trained volunteers, provides a safe environment for children to express feelings and emotions as well as the opportunity to meet with children and families who are experiencing situations similar to their own.

Wilkinson Center transforms the lives of Dallas families by providing pathways to self-sufficiency with dignity and respect. The organization addresses critical challenges such as food insecurity, lack of education, economic instability, and unemployment through integrated services, compassionate staff, and dedicated volunteers.

General Service Needs
Volunteers are needed for various roles, including assisting clients in the Food Pantry, tutoring adult learners in basic STEM subjects, engaging with English language learners, and supporting employment services with resume help, mock interviews, and sharing career experiences.

Tasks Available for UTA Students

• Food Pantry Assistant: Help direct and answer client questions, bag groceries, and restock shelves.
  
• Pantry 2 Go: Assist with packing food boxes for mobile food delivery every Thursday.
  
• Tutor: Support GED students in basic STEM subjects; sessions are 1 hour, once a week.
  
• Conversation Corners: Practice conversational English with ESL students; sessions are 1 hour, once a week.

The Women’s Center of Tarrant County’s purpose is to enable and empower women, individually and as a group, to build better futures for women, families and the community, help women from all walks of life – especially women in crises and transition – solve problems, seek opportunities, and develop the skills and confidence to meet the challenges of a changing world. Advocate for the needs and concerns of women.

General Services Needs
Services provided include: Rape Crisis Services, Crime Victims Services, General Counseling, Employment Services, and Public Awareness and Advocacy. Volunteer training is required.

Trinity River Audubon Center is a part of the National Audubon Society. Our mission is to protect birds and the places they need for today and tomorrow. We do so by offering educational programming to the public, academic field trips for students, conservation work days, large scale events, and outreach efforts throughout our community.

General Service Needs
We are offering a Service Learning program for professors and their students to gain hands-on experience in the conservation field through prairie restoration. Duties include propagating plants, removing invasive plants, and performing species surveys.

Plant propagation, native grass and forb plantings, invasive species removal, species surveys (birds, plants).
