Theatre Arts and Dance Assistant Professor J. Austin Eyer's essay, "A Queer Era Approaches: Head Over Heels and Explicit Representation," was published this month in MTEAJournal, the peer reviewed publication of the Musical Theatre Educators Alliance. Using UTA's Spring 2024 production as a case study, Eyer traces queer representation through musical theatre history, then offers ways theatre instructors can adapt rehearsal practices to make space for queer performers' perspectives. Writing as the show's director, Eyer asks that as "queer identity continues to define and redefine itself, we must be thoughtful about how we adapt our language as theatre makers to invite celebration of those who do not fit neatly in white, cis-hetero boxes."
