Choirs

A Cappella Choir

The A Cappella Choir is the premier choral ensemble at the University of Texas at Arlington, made up primarily of undergraduate and graduate vocal music majors selected by audition each fall. Under the direction of Dr. Karen Kenaston-French, the ensemble is known for its exceptional artistry, diverse programming, and commitment to performing music at the highest level.

The choir performs a wide range of repertoire—from Renaissance motets to cutting-edge contemporary works—with a strong emphasis on 20th- and 21st-century music. In recent years, the A Cappella Choir has earned national recognition through performances at major conferences including the American Choral Directors Association national convention (2015, 2025), Texas Music Educators Association (2014, 2019, 2024), the National Collegiate Choral Organization (2019), and the Southwestern Division of ACDA (2016, 2022)

University Singers

The University Singers is UTA’s vibrant second choral ensemble—an auditioned group known for its high musical standards, creative programming, and inclusive spirit. Directed by Dr. John Wayman, the ensemble brings together music majors and talented non-majors from across campus to perform a wide range of repertoire in a supportive and collaborative environment.

While the A Cappella Choir is UTA’s flagship choral ensemble, University Singers offers a meaningful and artistically rich experience for students with diverse academic and musical backgrounds. The ensemble specializes in modern works and arrangements by living composers, often exploring socially and culturally relevant themes. In 2024, University Singers collaborated with the A Cappella Choir and UTA Symphony Orchestra in a powerful performance of Carmina Burana.
